A number of students part of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) went to Orlando for the States Leadership Conference (SLC) this Friday, March 22, until Monday, March 25. The students who competed at the district level and qualified for the state level traveled to Orlando to either try to advance to the national level or participate as voting delegates. With a total of twenty one students, chaperones Ms. Lopez, Mr. Munroe, and Mr. Goirigolzarri (Mr.G), adviser Mr. Reisert led the students to a wonderful, inspiring conference in Hilton Orlando.
On Friday, the buses arrived at around 11:00 am at the hotel. Students were given time to access their hotel rooms, unpack, and get ready. Depending on your competitive event, you either got dressed and went to a testing room or had extra time to relax and study. Students were then given time to shower and get ready for the first general session, which ended at 9:45pm. In-room curfew was set at 11:30 pm.
The next day, students who tested on Friday found out if they had advanced to the next stage. Those who advanced were given a time for their presentations, and any time before that was assumed study time. Those who did not advance, together with voting delegates, had the opportunity to watch other presentations and be a part of the audience. The day was dedicated to all remaining performances and written tests. Voting booths were also set up around the hotel so that students could elect next year’s Florida FBLA board. Each district also had a meeting to elect their district representative. Students ate dinner, and the curfew was set at 11:30 pm.
Sunday began early as students attended the Second General Session, with the honor of Dr. Sampson Davis as a motivational guest speaker. The session went from 9:30 am until 11:00 am. Students and chaperones then had a day to explore Orlando’s attractions or stay at the hotel to relax if preferred. Ms. Lopez and Mr. Munroe took students to Universal City Walk for a few hours to eat lunch and explore. Finally, at 7:00 pm, all conference students, chaperones, and advisers attended the Awards Assembly and Officers’ Installation. In-room curfew was set at midnight.
Students, advisers, and chaperones woke up early on Monday, ate some breakfast, and got on the bus to come back home. Students loved the experience and are very excited to try again next year. Thank you to everyone who attended!
